Teaching FAQ

Q: How do you teach?
A: My method is a lot more relaxed, but just as (if not more) effective, than most other forms of musical teaching. I proceed at the student’s pace to make sure they’re comfortable and have complete understanding of the styles and concepts being learned. Whatever their reasons are for learning the instrument, I’ll give them all the knowledge and guidance they’ll need to help them reach their goals.

Q: Do I need to be able to read music?
A: No, that isn’t necessary. I teach students to play “by ear” so they will be able to express themselves instantly, without having to refer to any music sheets.

Q: How often should I take lessons?
A: For complete beginners and intermediate players, once a week is ideal. I wouldn’t recommend less than 1 lesson every 2 weeks.

Q: What is the recommended age to begin Sitar lessons?
A: Children aged six years and upwards can begin taking Sitar lessons, and they can start even younger if they learn on a small-sized Sitar.

Q: How long does it take to learn an instrument?
A: It varies from student to student, depending on their aptitude, discipline, and how often they are able to study and practice. With regular practice, a student should reach a basic level of proficiency within a few months. Most of my students take lessons long term because they enjoy their lessons so much and want to continue improving.

Q: I would like to learn Hindustani Vocal, but I have never taken singing lessons before. Could you still teach me?
A: Just like learning any instrument for the first time, the keys are perseverance and being passionate about learning! If you already enjoy Hindustani Vocal to the extent you want to know more about it, or if you ever find yourself absent-mindedly humming along to your favourite Indian songs, I can teach you how to sing and help you achieve your musical goals. Even if you’ve never taken any singing lessons before or are shy about the idea of singing in front of anybody, you’ll feel your confidence and abilities quickly beginning to grow.

Q: Could I help my child practice, even if I don’t have any musical ability?
A: Of course. That’s not only a fantastic way to encourage your child and support their hard work, it’s a lovely opportunity to take a musical journey together. I will be very happy to give you advice on how to help your child practice. After all, you are your child’s best coach!

Q: Can I just take one month of lessons?
A: Trying to learn an instrument in such a short time isn’t giving yourself, or your teacher, much of a chance! Playing an instrument is a physical skill and, like any physical skill, it needs constant reputation. You’ll need to allow more than one month if you want to achieve any genuine results! However, I don’t require a minimum commitment for lessons and you can discontinue your lessons at any time.

Q: What should I do if I want to know anything else?
A: Get in touch! I’m always available to help and you’ll find a contact form and contact details on this website.

My 10-year-old daughter and I have been learning Sitar from Pandit Vijay Jagtap since November last year. From the very first lesson, we both came away feeling very peaceful.  He’s kind, tolerant, patient, cultured, expert in his field and enjoys what he teaches. As for myself, have learnt a lot more in the last few months with Pandit Vijay Jagtap. I would most definitely recommend this teacher. We are both really enjoying our lessons… so much so that I’m waiting for my next child to be old enough to learn from him too!
